Uasin Gishu Governor Meets PS Anne Wang'ombe to Discuss Women's Empowerment in ASALs Counties

Uasin Gishu Governor, Jonathan Bii, held a productive meeting today with the Principal Secretary for Gender and Affirmative Action, Anne Wang'ombe, to discuss the social and economic empowerment of women in Kenya's 23 Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) counties. The two leaders focused on addressing critical issues facing women in the region, including the urgent need to eradicate Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and other forms of Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

Governor Bii and PS Wang'ombe shared concerns over the high prevalence of these harmful practices and the impact they have on the health, safety, and empowerment of women and girls. "It is vital that we continue our efforts to eradicate FGM and all forms of GBV in the ASALs counties. We must ensure that women and girls in these regions are free from violence and discrimination," said Governor Bii.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of supporting women through sustainable development initiatives, particularly in the areas of water provision and agribusiness. These sectors are seen as key to building resilience and improving livelihoods in ASALs, where women are often the primary providers for their families.

“We need to ensure that women have access to water and are empowered to participate in agribusiness activities. These initiatives are crucial in helping them build sustainable livelihoods and strengthen their resilience against climate-related challenges,” said PS Wang'ombe.

In addition, the two leaders discussed the coordination of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working in the region, particularly those focused on gender issues. They acknowledged the valuable role that NGOs play in supporting women and children and emphasized the importance of streamlining efforts to maximize impact.

Governor Bii reiterated his commitment to working alongside national and regional stakeholders to improve the lives of women in ASALs, stressing that the empowerment of women is central to the broader development of the region.

The discussion concluded with a renewed commitment to tackling the challenges facing women in the ASALs, ensuring that gender equality and women’s empowerment remain priorities in both policy and action.
