Kenya Dairy Board Launches "MoreMilk" Project to Boost Milk Safety and Livelihoods

The Kenya Dairy Board (KDB) is excited to announce the official launch of the MoreMilk: More Milk for Lives and Livelihoods in Kenya project, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at improving milk safety, accessibility, and affordability across the country. The launch took place today at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Nairobi.

The project, valued at 200 million Kenyan Shillings, is funded by the Gates Foundation and the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. Over the next four years, the initiative will be implemented in partnership with ILRI, with a focus on enhancing milk safety standards, promoting regulatory compliance, and supporting the growth of small-scale dairy businesses in Kenya.

The MoreMilk project specifically targets 450 informal and small business vendors across three counties: Nyandarua, Nakuru, and Uasin Gishu. Through capacity-building activities, the program aims to improve the livelihoods of these vendors, enhance milk safety, and increase their participation in regulated markets, ultimately benefiting both producers and consumers.

KDB Managing Director, Margaret Rugut Kibogy, emphasized the importance of the project in aligning with the Board's mandate to ensure the safety and quality of milk and milk products for consumers. "This project is a significant step towards transforming the dairy sector by ensuring that consumers have access to safe, affordable, and quality milk, while also supporting the growth of small businesses in the sector," said Kibogy.

Dr. Joshua Chepchieng, Principal Secretary at the State Department for Livestock Development, was the chief guest at the event. He expressed his support for the project, noting its potential to improve the dairy value chain and strengthen the livelihoods of informal vendors. "This initiative is a game-changer for the dairy industry, particularly for small-scale farmers and vendors who play a critical role in the sector," Dr. Chepchieng remarked.

Also in attendance was Dr. Prof. Appolinaire Djikeng, Director General of ILRI, who highlighted the importance of collaboration between research institutions, the government, and industry stakeholders to drive sustainable growth in the dairy sector.

The MoreMilk project is expected to yield significant outcomes, including improved milk safety standards, increased regulatory compliance, greater participation of informal businesses in regulated markets, and enhanced consumer health.

The initiative is a testament to KDB's ongoing commitment to developing the dairy sector, supporting stakeholders across the Dairy Value Chain, and ensuring the quality and safety of milk products for consumers across Kenya.
