President William Ruto has handed over the newly completed Kapkatet Modern Market in Bureti Constituency, Kericho County, to small-scale traders, in a move aimed at improving trading conditions and supporting local businesses.

The modern facility will accommodate more than 200 traders, providing them with a more secure and dignified environment to conduct business.

The market is among 12 modern markets being constructed across Kericho County as part of the government's wider programme to upgrade trading spaces for small-scale traders.

According to President Ruto, the facilities are designed to provide essential amenities including electricity, water, toilets, storage facilities, cold rooms and internet connectivity.

The President said the development would help move traders away from the difficult conditions associated with traditional open-air markets, where traders are often exposed to extreme weather, mud and inadequate facilities.

 “The days of open-air markets, where our traders are exposed to the scorching sun, heavy rain, mud and other harsh conditions, are coming to an end,” Ruto said.

Ruto targets more than 600 modern markets

The President said the government remains committed to delivering more than 600 modern markets across Kenya, describing the initiative as part of efforts to improve the livelihoods of small-scale traders commonly referred to as Mama Mboga.

The markets are expected to provide better working environments while creating opportunities for traders to expand their businesses and increase household incomes.

KSh1.1 billion Kapkatet Stadium launched

During the same visit, President Ruto also launched construction of the KSh1.1 billion Kapkatet Stadium, a major sporting infrastructure project expected to transform the area’s sporting landscape.

The stadium will have a 10,000-seat capacity and is expected to be completed early next year.

The facility will feature a six-lane running track, a standard football pitch and other modern sporting facilities, providing a venue for athletics, football and other sporting activities.

The stadium is expected to benefit local athletes and footballers while creating opportunities for sporting events and talent development in Kericho County.

Boost for traders and sports talent

The two projects are expected to provide a boost to both economic and sporting activities in the region, with the modern market targeting small-scale traders and the stadium providing infrastructure for athletes and other sports enthusiasts.

The developments form part of the government's broader infrastructure programme aimed at improving public facilities and creating opportunities for communities across the country.
