Pochettino Questions Premier League Controls After Man City Verdict

United States men's national team head coach Mauricio Pochettino has questioned the Premier League's financial controls after Manchester City were reportedly found guilty of 114 of 115 alleged rule breaches.

Pochettino, who previously managed Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, said the situation raises questions about how the league's financial regulations were enforced and what punishment could adequately address the damage caused.

An independent commission is reported to have found Manchester City guilty of the majority of the charges brought against the club. The case covers alleged financial breaches dating back to the period between 2009 and 2018, although the full ruling has not yet been made public. City has consistently denied wrongdoing and are expected to appeal the findings.

Speaking about the case, Pochettino pointed to previous punishments handed to clubs such as Everton and Nottingham Forest, who received points deductions for separate financial rule breaches.

He questioned what form of punishment could now be imposed on City, given the length of time that has passed since the alleged violations.

"What is the punishment? Nothing," Pochettino said, while referring to the difficulties of imposing sanctions after the events have already taken place.

The Argentine coach also questioned the effectiveness of the Premier League's monitoring system.

"Where were the controls?" he asked, recalling his own experience managing Tottenham during the construction of the club's new stadium.

Pochettino said Tottenham had been required to operate under strict financial restrictions during his time at the club. He recalled that Spurs went 18 months without signing a player while working within the league's financial requirements.

He questioned why similar controls appeared to have been applied differently to other clubs.

"Why were those controls so strict with us and so much less strict with some others?" Pochettino said.

The manager said the reported findings have created uncertainty over how football can address achievements from a period in which financial rules may have been breached.

"If it's true that they broke 114 rules, we have lived through a period of deception," he said.

Pochettino added that no eventual punishment could completely reverse what happened during the years covered by the case.

"No type of punishment will make it possible to repair what was done," he said, arguing that the situation had damaged confidence in the Premier League's financial controls.

The former Tottenham manager also described the situation as sad because supporters and clubs may now question achievements that were celebrated during the period under investigation.

"It's a very sad situation because what was already achieved and celebrated maybe was not real, and what wasn't so good could have been better," he said.

Manchester City won several major trophies during the period covered by the allegations, including Premier League titles. The club has maintained its innocence and is expected to challenge the reported findings through the available appeal process.

The Premier League case remains separate from previous UEFA proceedings involving City. In 2020, the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned a two-year UEFA competition ban imposed on the club, although it upheld a €10 million fine for failing to cooperate with UEFA's investigation.

Pochettino said the focus should now be on ensuring that football's financial rules are applied consistently in the future.

"We have lived through a period where sporting justice did not exist," he said. "If the charges are proven, it's very difficult to repair what happened."

He added that he hoped the case would ultimately lead to stronger equality in the application of football's financial regulations.

The reported verdict has not ended the dispute. Manchester City's expected appeal means the case could continue through further legal proceedings before any final outcome and sanctions are established.
