Bii Unveils Fresh Push to Empower Youth Through Sports, Talent Development in Uasin Gishu

 Uasin Gishu Governor Dr Jonathan Bii has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to empowering young people through sports, talent development and employment opportunities.

Speaking during the Kapsang/Moisoy Community Run, Governor Bii said his government was deliberately investing in sports as a platform through which young people can discover, develop and earn from their talents.

Bii said sports remains a key priority under his administration’s fifth pillar, popularly referred to as the Nguzo ya Sports Talent Development and Youth Empowerment, with resources being directed towards programmes aimed at creating opportunities for young people across the county.

The Governor highlighted the Governor’s Cup Football Tournament as one of the flagship initiatives through which his administration is nurturing grassroots talent. The Ward Championship phase of the tournament recently concluded, with teams progressing through the various levels of competition.

According to the Governor, the tournament provides financial incentives to top-performing teams at the ward, sub-county and county levels, with the eventual county champion set to receive a KSh1 million prize.

Bii said the impact of the programme is already being felt, noting that some young people who participated in previous editions of tournaments organised by the county government have gone on to secure opportunities with sports clubs and corporate organisations.

He said the county government would continue strengthening its investment in youth-focused programmes to ensure talented young people are not only given platforms to showcase their abilities but can also turn those talents into sustainable livelihoods.

The Governor maintained that sports can play a critical role in addressing youth unemployment while also promoting healthy lifestyles, discipline and social cohesion among young people.

He said his administration would continue allocating resources towards sports and youth empowerment programmes across the county, with a focus on identifying talent at the grassroots and creating pathways for young people to progress to higher levels of competition and employment.

The remarks come as Uasin Gishu continues to position sports and youth empowerment among its key development priorities, particularly in a county widely recognised for producing athletes and other sporting talents.

Bii urged young people to take advantage of opportunities created through county programmes and remain committed to developing their skills, saying the government would continue working to ensure talent translates into economic opportunities.
