Zamzam Mohamed Reaffirms Commitment to Widows' Empowerment at International Widows Day Commemoration

Mombasa Woman Representative Zamzam Mohamed has reaffirmed her commitment to championing the rights and welfare of widows, calling for stronger policies and programmes that promote their economic empowerment, access to justice and social inclusion.

Speaking during the International Widows Day commemoration held at the Aga Khan Academy Hall, Zamzam said widows deserve dignity, protection and equal opportunities to participate fully in the country's socio-economic development.

The event brought together leaders, community members and stakeholders to recognise the resilience of widows and highlight the challenges they continue to face, including economic hardship, discrimination and limited access to essential services.

Among those who attended were Aharub Khatri, Rashid Bedzimba and Members of the Mombasa County Assembly, who joined calls for sustained interventions aimed at improving the lives of widows.

Zamzam said empowering widows is critical to strengthening families and communities, noting that investments in education, economic opportunities and legal protection would enable them to rebuild their lives with dignity and confidence.

She reiterated her commitment to working with national and county governments, civil society organisations and development partners to ensure widows receive the support they need while advocating for policies that guarantee equality, inclusion and protection of their rights.

The Woman Representative urged society to continue standing in solidarity with widows and to foster a culture that respects, supports and empowers them to thrive.
