Jonathan Bii Unveils Major Boost for Bodaboda Sector as Uasin Gishu Pumps KSh 29.7 Million into Riders' SACCOs

Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to empowering the bodaboda sector, announcing that KSh 29.7 million has been disbursed to 18 bodaboda SACCOs through the county's Cooperative Enterprise Development Fund.

Addressing thousands of riders during an engagement forum in Eldoret City, Governor Bii described the bodaboda industry as a key economic pillar that supports thousands of young people and families across the county.

The governor revealed that the county government has so far disbursed KSh 772.7 million to cooperative societies, with bodaboda SACCOs among the beneficiaries. He said the funding is aimed at strengthening cooperative operations, expanding business opportunities, and improving the livelihoods of riders.

"As an administration, we remain committed to creating an enabling environment that supports growth, enterprise development, and economic empowerment for bodaboda riders," said Bii.

In a move aimed at reducing the cost of doing business, the governor highlighted his administration's decision to lower monthly operating sticker fees. Riders operating within Eldoret City now pay KSh 400, down from KSh 600, while those in trading centres and rural areas pay KSh 200, reduced from KSh 400.

Governor Bii noted that the fee reductions were part of his election pledge to ease the financial burden on small businesses and informal sector operators.

During the meeting, he assured riders that his administration would continue engaging stakeholders in the transport sector to enhance safety, improve organization, and create more opportunities for economic growth.

The announcement was welcomed by riders, who praised the county government's support through SACCO financing and business-friendly policies, saying the initiatives would help improve their earnings and strengthen the sector's contribution to the local economy.

With thousands of residents relying on the bodaboda industry for income, the county government says continued investment in the sector remains central to its broader agenda of youth empowerment and economic transformation.
