Truce as Oburu Odinga Leads Reconciliation Between Barasa and Oparanya

A political truce appears to be taking shape in Western Kenya after ODM Party Deputy Leader Oburu Odinga spearheaded reconciliation efforts between Fernandes Barasa and Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya.

The meeting, held behind closed doors, is said to have focused on ending months of political tension between the two leaders, whose rivalry has in recent months threatened to divide ODM supporters in Kakamega County and the larger Western Kenya region.

Sources familiar with the discussions indicated that Oburu urged the two leaders to prioritize unity and development over political competition, warning that internal divisions could weaken the party’s influence ahead of future political realignments.

Speaking after the talks, Barasa welcomed the reconciliation initiative, saying leaders must work together to address challenges affecting residents of Kakamega County.

“We have agreed to put the interests of the people first and move forward in unity,” Barasa said.

Oparanya, who has remained influential in the region even after leaving the governor’s office, also emphasized the need for cooperation among ODM leaders, noting that political disagreements should not derail service delivery and party cohesion.

Political analysts view the truce as a strategic move by ODM to consolidate its support base in Western Kenya, a region considered crucial to the party’s national political ambitions.

The rapprochement comes amid increased political activity within ODM as senior party figures seek to strengthen grassroots networks and contain emerging factional battles.
