A fresh wave of sorrow has hit families affected by the Utumishi fire tragedy after police confirmed that the mother of one of the students involved in the incident has died in a road accident along the Gilgil–Nakuru Highway.

According to police reports, the woman lost her life instantly after the fatal crash, while her husband sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.

The development comes as the nation continues to grapple with the aftermath of the school fire incident that has left at least 16 students dead and 79 others injured, according to records from the Ministry of Education.

Authorities say the fire, which broke out at the affected institution, has triggered ongoing investigations as families await answers on what led to the deadly blaze and whether safety protocols were followed.

The double tragedy has intensified grief among affected families, with many now mourning both the victims of the fire and the sudden loss of a parent connected to the incident.

Officials are expected to provide further updates as investigations into both the fire and the road accident continue.

Kenya remains in mourning as calls grow for improved school safety measures and stricter enforcement of road safety regulations along major highways.
