Speaker Wetang’ula Calls for Nationwide Crackdown on School Safety Non-Compliance

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has urged the Ministry of Education to launch a nationwide crackdown on learning institutions that have failed to adhere to government-mandated safety standards.

Speaking during a fundraising drive held at Chekalini Comprehensive School in support of PAG churches, Wetang’ula expressed concern that a significant number of school management boards have neglected the implementation of critical safety requirements meant to protect learners.

He said the recent Utumishi Girls Academy fire tragedy, which claimed 16 lives, should serve as a wake-up call for authorities to intensify inspections and take firm action against institutions that disregard safety regulations.

“The loss of young lives is a painful reminder that compliance with safety standards is not optional. We must ensure every school is fully compliant to prevent such tragedies from recurring,” he said.

Wetang’ula further condemned attacks directed at the Luhya Council of Elders during the burial ceremony of the late Hon. Patrick Wangamati, stating that community elders deserve respect and should not be subjected to ridicule or political hostility during mourning periods.

He also cautioned first-term Members of Parliament against being drawn into premature presidential campaigns, urging them instead to focus on legislative duties and service delivery. Wetang’ula reaffirmed his commitment to working with leaders across the country to promote unity within the Luhya community, emphasizing the need for a long-term and structured political vision.

He called for calm, respect in political discourse, and greater national cohesion as the country continues to navigate its governance and development priorities.
