Nandi County Erupts in Celebration as Sawe Returns Home After Historic London Marathon Victory

Jubilant scenes marked the homecoming of marathon sensation Sebastian Kimaru Sawe, who returned to Kapsabet following a historic triumph at the London Marathon, where he stunned the world with a sub-two-hour performance and shattered the marathon record.

Residents, local leaders, and athletes gathered in large numbers to celebrate Sawe’s remarkable feat, which has elevated Kenya’s status in global athletics. The event, hosted by Nandi Governor Stephen Sang, was not only a celebration of victory but also a tribute to the enduring spirit of excellence and resilience that defines the county’s athletes.

Speaking during the ceremony, Governor Sang praised Sawe’s achievement as a powerful testament to the belief that “no human is limited,” noting that the athlete’s discipline and determination have inspired millions across the country and beyond.

In recognition of his extraordinary accomplishment, the Nandi County Government awarded Sawe a three-bedroom affordable housing unit in Kapsabet, alongside other gifts, as a token of appreciation for bringing pride to the region.

The celebration was further graced by the presence of legendary retired athletes whose contributions have shaped Kenya’s athletics legacy. Among them were Dr. Kipchoge Keino, Ibrahim Hussein, Patrick Sang, Tecla Chemabwai Sang, Fatwel Kimaiyo, and Janet Jepkosgei. Their attendance underscored the deep roots of athletic excellence in Nandi County.

Current stars also joined in honoring Sawe, including Amos Kipruto, Emmanuel Wanyonyi, Cyprian Kotut, and Benson Kipruto, reflecting unity across generations of Kenyan champions.

Governor Sang also extended heartfelt congratulations to Sawe’s parents, commending them for nurturing a talent that has become a beacon of national pride.

“As a county and as a nation, we celebrate not just an individual victory, but a collective achievement that belongs to all of us,” Sang said.

Sawe’s triumph adds another chapter to Kenya’s rich long-distance running heritage, inspiring young athletes to pursue greatness on the global stage.
