Historic Boost for North Eastern Kenya as 84% Complete Wajir Stadium Nears Completion Ahead of Madaraka Day
Wajir is on the verge of a historic transformation after the rapid construction of the long-awaited Wajir Stadium reached 84% completion, marking a major milestone in the region’s sporting and infrastructure development journey since independence.
For over 62 years, Wajir has lacked a modern stadium, with residents relying on open grounds such as Wajir Baraza Park for sports, cultural events and public gatherings. That is now set to change as the ultra-modern facility nears completion ahead of the June 1st Madaraka Day celebrations.
The project, spearheaded under the leadership of William Ruto, is being implemented through the Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the Kenya Defence Forces, with works being fast-tracked to meet national timelines.
Officials say the stadium is being positioned not only as a key venue for national celebrations but also as a long-term investment in sports development and youth empowerment across the North Eastern region.
The 10,000-seater facility features a full-sized football pitch designed for artificial turf, a standard eight-lane athletics track, modern changing rooms, VIP lounges, spectator terraces with ongoing seat installation, ample parking space, and a borehole to ensure reliable water supply for operations.
Security and coordination of the project are being overseen by the Ministry of Interior and National Administration through a multi-agency framework aimed at ensuring timely delivery, quality standards, and long-term protection of the facility.
Authorities say the stadium is expected to significantly transform the social and economic landscape of Wajir by providing a platform for local talent development, boosting small businesses, and promoting community cohesion through sports and public events.
Once completed, the facility is expected to serve as a key regional hub for athletics, football and national gatherings, addressing a long-standing infrastructure gap in the region.
Government officials have expressed confidence that the project will be fully completed in time for Madaraka Day preparations, with rehearsals and national event planning already underway.
The development marks one of the most significant sporting infrastructure investments in Wajir’s history, signaling a new chapter for youth engagement and regional inclusion in national development programs.
