Public Petitions Committee Moves to Clear Case Backlog
The National Assembly’s Public Petitions Committee has intensified efforts to address a growing backlog of public petitions, with plans underway to respond to several cases ahead of the House’s next sitting.
The Committee, chaired by Runyenjes MP Muchangi Karemba, is expected to deliberate on multiple petitions referred to it by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetang’ula. The move is part of a broader push to enhance responsiveness and accountability to the public.
Established under Standing Order 208A, the Public Petitions Committee is mandated to review all petitions presented before Parliament, investigate the issues raised, and make recommendations to the House. Its work is anchored in Article 119(1) of the Constitution, which guarantees every citizen the right to petition Parliament on matters within its legislative authority, including proposals to enact, amend, or repeal laws.
According to the Committee, at least 16 petitions have already been reviewed and investigated. These reports are expected to be tabled once the National Assembly resumes sittings after the short recess.
Chairperson Karemba emphasized the Committee’s commitment to ensuring that public concerns are addressed in a timely and efficient manner. “We are working to clear the backlog so that Kenyans who have sought Parliament’s intervention can receive feedback and appropriate action,” he said.
The tabling of the reports is scheduled for when the House reconvenes on April 31, 2026, marking a key milestone in the Committee’s efforts to streamline its operations and strengthen public participation in governance.
The initiative reflects Parliament’s ongoing commitment to uphold democratic principles by providing citizens with a formal platform to raise grievances and influence legislative processes.
