Outrage as Journalist Assaulted While Covering Event in Trans Nzoia
A section of journalists in Trans Nzoia County has condemned the assault of a reporter attached to K24, describing the incident as a serious threat to press freedom in the country.
According to a statement released by the Kitale Journalists Association chairman, George Njoroge was attacked by an aide to a politician while on duty covering a public function in Cherangany. The journalist was reportedly carrying out his professional responsibilities when the incident occurred.
The association termed the attack as “a direct assault on press freedom and the safety of journalists,” emphasizing the critical role the media plays in informing the public.
“We strongly condemn this act. Journalists must be allowed to operate freely and safely without intimidation or violence,” the statement read.
The journalists’ body has called on security agencies to act swiftly and decisively, urging police to investigate the matter and bring those responsible to justice.
They warned that failure to take action could embolden perpetrators and lead to increased hostility toward media practitioners, particularly as the country moves closer to the 2027 general elections.
Media stakeholders have increasingly raised concerns over the safety of journalists during political events, noting a worrying trend of harassment and violence against reporters in the line of duty.
The association reiterated its commitment to defending press freedom and called on political leaders to rein in their supporters and respect the role of the media in a democratic society.
