Two Arrested as Police Seize Cannabis Sativa on Awasi–Kisumu Highway

Two suspected drug traffickers were arrested and a consignment of cannabis sativa seized following a dramatic police operation along the Awasi–Kisumu highway.

According to police, the suspects were nabbed after law enforcement officers manning a routine roadblock intercepted a motor vehicle ferrying the illegal substance. The vehicle, registration number KDP 802C, had been officially assigned to transport sugar but raised suspicion when its occupants failed to stop after being flagged down.

This triggered a high-speed chase that ended at the Ngere area along the Kisumu–Kericho highway, where officers successfully intercepted the vehicle. A subsequent search led to the recovery of 23 stones of cannabis sativa concealed inside the motor vehicle.

The two suspects were identified as Hussein Sharif Abdala (52) and Fania Hamisi (23), a Ugandan national. Both were immediately arrested and taken into custody.

Police said the recovered narcotics are being held as exhibits pending weighing and sampling, in line with legal procedures, ahead of the suspects’ arraignment in court.

In a statement, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reaffirmed its commitment to combating drug trafficking, noting that sustained operations and multi-agency collaboration remain key in dismantling narcotics networks.

“The DCI has zero tolerance for drug traffickers, regardless of their status, and will continue to pursue and disrupt criminal syndicates involved in the trade,” the statement read.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing as authorities seek to establish the source and intended destination of the drugs.
