Orma Elders Surrender Two More Illegal Firearms in Tana River Disarmament Drive

Orma elders in Bangali Sub-County, Tana River County, have surrendered two additional illegal firearms to security authorities, marking further progress in the ongoing voluntary disarmament exercise aimed at restoring peace in the area.

The two firearms were handed over at the Bangali Police Station, bringing the total number of weapons surrendered by the Orma community to six since the start of the 60-day amnesty period granted to residents to voluntarily submit illegal guns.

The disarmament initiative follows a directive issued on January 12 by the Coast Regional Security Team, which ordered members of the Orma and Degodia communities to surrender all illegal firearms in their possession. The directive came in the wake of violent clashes between the two communities in late 2025 over access to pasture and water, clashes that left at least 14 people dead.

So far, the Degodia community has surrendered five firearms, while the Orma community has now handed in six, signaling growing cooperation with security agencies.

Speaking after receiving the latest firearms at Bangali Police Station, Deputy County Commissioner Joseph Kipkorir commended elders from both communities for their continued support and leadership in promoting peace.

“We appreciate the role played by elders in encouraging their people to surrender illegal firearms. This cooperation is critical in preventing further violence and ensuring lasting peace in Bangali Sub-County,” Kipkorir said.

Security officials reiterated that the amnesty period remains in effect and urged residents still in possession of illegal weapons to take advantage of the window to surrender them without fear of prosecution.

Authorities expressed optimism that continued community collaboration will help stabilize the region and prevent a recurrence of the deadly clashes witnessed late last year.
