Babu Owino Hails Acquittal of Nuru Okanga as Victory for Justice
Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has welcomed the acquittal of Nuru Okanga, describing the court’s decision as a triumph of justice after what he termed a long and exhausting legal battle.
In a statement issued after the ruling, Owino said Okanga walked free after the Honourable Magistrate found that the prosecution had failed to present sufficient evidence to sustain the charges against him, bringing to an end a case that had dragged on for over a year.
“Today, justice spoke,” Owino said. “After a long and exhausting year in court, Nuru Okanga walked free. This is more than a legal victory — it is the saving of a life, one man rescued from the jaws of prison.”
The Embakasi East legislator praised the judiciary for upholding the rule of law and resisting what he implied were attempts to secure a conviction without adequate proof. He noted that the ruling reaffirmed the principle that justice must be based on evidence, fairness and due process.
Owino also paid glowing tribute to Okanga’s legal team, crediting their commitment and persistence for the outcome of the case.
“We celebrate this hard-fought triumph with deep gratitude to the dedicated counsel whose tireless defense, commitment, and belief in justice made this moment possible,” he said.
According to Owino, the acquittal should serve as a reminder of the importance of protecting individual rights and ensuring that the criminal justice system is not used to unfairly punish citizens.
“Today, hope prevailed,” he added, calling on Kenyans to continue trusting the courts while also demanding accountability and professionalism in investigations and prosecutions.
The ruling brings relief to Okanga, his family and supporters, closing a chapter marked by uncertainty and prolonged court appearances.
