UN-Habitat Envoys Visit Konza Technopolis, Strengthening Collaboration on Smart City Development

Konza Technopolis CEO John Paul Okwiri today hosted Kenya’s Permanent Representative to UN-Habitat, Ambassador Nakhumicha Wafula, on an official visit to the Smart City, reaffirming the growing partnership between the global urban agency and one of Africa’s most ambitious technology hubs. Ambassador Wafula was accompanied by Deputy Permanent Representative Ambassador Beatrice Karago.

The high-level visit underscores the deepening collaboration between UN-Habitat and Konza Technopolis in promoting sustainable urban development, smart city technologies, and innovative solutions that align with Kenya’s long-term urban transformation agenda.

Speaking during the visit, CEO Okwiri highlighted the strong synergy between Konza Technopolis and UN-Habitat, noting that such engagements contribute significantly to the country’s vision of developing future-ready urban centres that leverage technology to improve the quality of life.

“Konza’s partnership with UN-Habitat continues to play a key role in shaping urban innovations that support sustainability, inclusivity, and smart infrastructure,” Okwiri said. “We are honoured to host Ambassador Wafula and Ambassador Karago as we deepen our shared commitment to building cities of the future.”

Ambassador Wafula commended Konza Technopolis for its progress and innovation, noting that the Smart City stands as a model for the region in integrating technology, environmental sustainability, and forward-thinking urban planning.

“Konza is an example of what is possible when vision meets innovation,” she stated. “Our collaboration will continue to support Kenya’s aspirations for well-planned, technologically advanced cities that are resilient, inclusive, and globally competitive.”

During the tour, the delegation was briefed on ongoing and upcoming developments, including digital infrastructure projects, smart mobility systems, renewable energy initiatives, and research and innovation clusters already taking shape within the technopolis.

Konza Technopolis has emerged as a key pillar in Kenya’s digital economy blueprint, with strong partnerships across government, academia, private sector players, and international organisations such as UN-Habitat. The collaboration aims to advance urban solutions that can be scaled across Kenya and the wider region.

The visit concluded with renewed commitment from both institutions to continue strengthening joint initiatives that support sustainable urbanisation and technological advancement in line with global smart city standards.
