PS Hinga Hands Over Key Social Amenities at New Boma Yangu Mukuru Estate Ahead of 5,000-Unit Presidential Handover

The government’s Affordable Housing Programme marked another major milestone today after the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Housing and Urban Development (SDHUD), Charles Hinga, officially handed over a suite of key social amenities at the newly completed Boma Yangu Mukuru Housing Estate. The event comes just days before the anticipated handover of 5,000 new housing units by the President, one of the biggest allocations under the flagship programme.

Speaking during the ceremony, PS Hinga said the handover of social amenities is a demonstration of the government’s commitment to delivering not just houses, but complete, dignified communities where residents can live, work, and access essential services within their neighbourhoods.

“Today’s handover underscores our dedication to ensuring that every Affordable Housing project is supported by infrastructure and amenities that promote safety, economic empowerment, and improved quality of life,” he said. “We are not simply building homes—we are building communities.”

Among the facilities officially handed over was a fully equipped Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) and Daycare Centre, which will support working parents and provide young children with a conducive learning environment. The centre is expected to benefit hundreds of families who will soon occupy the new homes.

Also unveiled was a modern strip mall designed to spur local economic growth. The mall will host various businesses including cybercafes, eateries, coffee shops, and clothing stores, giving residents easier access to everyday services while creating opportunities for youth and small business owners. According to SDHUD, such commercial components are crucial in fostering vibrant community spaces and reducing the need for long commutes.

In the health sector, the PS handed over a new outpatient centre/dispensary that will offer residents quick and affordable access to primary healthcare services. The facility is equipped to handle common medical needs, reducing pressure on nearby hospitals while improving the overall health and wellbeing of the community.

To enhance safety and emergency preparedness, the estate now boasts an in-house police post and a fire station—an investment officials say will significantly strengthen security and emergency response capacity in the area. Residents will benefit from round-the-clock policing and faster response times during emergencies, helping create a secure environment for families and businesses.

Government officials noted that the rollout of these amenities is part of a broader strategy to ensure that housing projects in previously marginalized or informal areas come with complete infrastructure—roads, water, sanitation, public spaces, and social services. Mukuru, one of Nairobi’s largest informal settlements, has been a focal point of the Affordable Housing Programme, with the New Boma Yangu Estate representing a major transformation in the area’s urban landscape.

Residents and local leaders welcomed the handover, saying the new amenities are a major step toward uplifting the community and improving living standards. Many expressed optimism that the project will open doors to more economic opportunities and better public services.

With the President expected to officially hand over the 5,000 housing units in the coming days, today’s event sets the stage for what government officials describe as a new chapter for families moving into the estate.

The New Boma Yangu Mukuru Estate is among several large-scale projects under the Affordable Housing Programme aimed at addressing Kenya’s housing deficit while promoting inclusive, well-planned urban development. The government has indicated that similar integrated amenities will be incorporated into all major housing sites across the country to ensure long-term sustainability and resident wellbeing.
