Murkomen Vows Tough Action on “Goons” as Government Targets Politically Instigated Violence

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has vowed firm and impartial action against groups involved in politically instigated violence, warning that the government will deal with “goons” operating across the country without fear or favour.

Speaking on Monday during the graduation of chiefs and assistant chiefs at the National Police College, Embakasi ‘A’ Campus in Nairobi, Murkomen condemned recent violent incidents in the capital, blaming them on political leaders who allegedly mobilise youth armed with crude weapons to disrupt events.

“There is a phenomenon that has grown in the country, perpetuated by political leaders who mobilise goons to cheer for them. They carry rungus and machetes,” he said. “What happened here in Nairobi cannot be condoned. Those responsible shall be dealt with and face the law — without fear, favour, and indiscriminately.”

The CS noted that chiefs nationwide have increasingly faced challenges in managing public gatherings, including funerals, due to the presence of hired gangs. He added that the issue will be a top priority for the security sector in the coming months.

Murkomen also highlighted the significance of the training program for chiefs and assistant chiefs, many of whom have served for decades without formal training. Since August, 5,892 officers have undergone instruction in paralegal skills, governance, human rights, conflict resolution, community engagement and security management.

The program also addressed key national threats such as gender-based violence, sexual offences, drug and alcohol abuse among youth, banditry and terrorism.

Describing chiefs as “multipurpose officers” who handle everything from farmer registration to community conflict resolution, Murkomen praised their dedication, noting that some have been abducted or killed while serving in their communities.

“They are the heroes, always at the front line,” he said.

He further commended their role in combating gender-based violence and substance abuse, including collaborations with NACADA to curb drug and alcohol misuse.

President William Ruto presided over the ceremony, lauding the chiefs and assistant chiefs as critical pillars of local administration, security, and community cohesion.

The training initiative began on August 15, 2025, with the first cohort of 1,000 officers drawn from all 47 counties, marking a renewed government effort to strengthen grassroots governance and improve public service delivery.
