KEWOTA, Metis Sign Partnership to Boost Teachers’ AI Skills in Kenya
The Kenya Women Teachers Association (KEWOTA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Metis, an artificial intelligence (AI) innovation company, in a move aimed at equipping teachers across the country with the skills needed to adopt and use AI responsibly in their work.
The agreement, announced today, represents a significant step toward strengthening digital readiness among educators as schools increasingly turn to technology-driven approaches to teaching and administration.
KEWOTA Chief Executive Officer Benter Opande, accompanied by Chairperson Modesta Akaki, said AI is now a central force shaping education systems worldwide, stressing that Kenyan teachers must be prepared to integrate emerging technologies into classroom practice. She confirmed that KEWOTA will begin rolling out comprehensive AI training and wider digital transformation programs in 2026.
Opande also acknowledged the hesitation among some teachers regarding technological change, cautioning that relying solely on traditional methods could limit educators’ relevance and competitiveness in a rapidly evolving sector.
Under Opande’s leadership, KEWOTA has expanded its national presence and intensified efforts to champion professional development and digital literacy among women teachers. The new partnership with Metis is expected to introduce tailored AI learning modules, capacity-building workshops, and support structures to help teachers incorporate digital tools into lesson planning, student assessment, and administrative tasks.
Both KEWOTA and Metis emphasized that the adoption of AI in schools must remain ethical, safe, and aligned with Kenya’s educational values.
KEWOTA expressed gratitude to its partners and reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the skills, well-being, and professional growth of women teachers across the country.
