KEWOTA, Metis Sign Landmark AI Partnership to Strengthen Teachers’ Digital Skills

The Kenya Women Teachers Association (KEWOTA) has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Metis, an artificial intelligence (AI) innovation firm, setting the stage for a nationwide effort to equip teachers with essential AI skills for modern classrooms.

The agreement, announced today in Nairobi, signals KEWOTA’s renewed commitment to preparing educators for an increasingly digital learning environment. Through the partnership, teachers across Kenya will receive training on how to responsibly and effectively incorporate AI tools into classroom instruction and school operations.

KEWOTA Chief Executive Officer Benter Opande, accompanied by KEWOTA Chair Modesta Akaki, emphasized that AI is already reshaping education globally. She noted that KEWOTA will begin rolling out comprehensive AI capacity-building programs and digital transformation initiatives for teachers starting in 2026.

During the signing ceremony, Ms. Opande also addressed the hesitation among some educators to adopt emerging technologies. She warned that relying solely on traditional teaching methods without embracing digital innovation could undermine teachers’ competitiveness and relevance in today’s evolving education landscape.

Under Ms. Opande’s leadership, KEWOTA has expanded its national footprint and strengthened its advocacy for the professional growth and empowerment of women teachers. The organization views the AI partnership as another step toward fostering innovation, digital readiness, and gender-responsive education.

The collaboration with Metis will introduce customized AI learning modules, hands-on workshops, and continuous support structures designed to help teachers integrate digital tools into lesson planning, student assessment, and administrative tasks. Both organizations underscored the importance of ensuring that AI adoption in schools remains ethical, safe, and aligned with national education priorities.

KEWOTA expressed gratitude to partners who continue to support its mission of elevating the well-being, voice, and professional capacity of women educators across Kenya.
