Kajiado Marks International Day of Persons Living with Disabilities with Strong Leadership from Hon. Leah Sankaire

Kajiado County today marked the International Day of Persons Living with Disabilities (IDPWD) in Ongata Rongai Ward, in an uplifting celebration led and graced by Hon. Leah Sankaire, the Honorary Woman Representative for Kajiado. Her presence, compassion, and active engagement set the tone for a day dedicated to dignity, inclusion, and the empowerment of persons living with disabilities (PWDs).

Hon. Sankaire, widely recognised across the county for her commitment to vulnerable communities, reaffirmed her dedication to championing disability rights and ensuring that PWDs have full access to opportunities, social protection, and county support systems.

“Our children and persons living with disabilities are not just part of our community—they are central to it. We must continue breaking barriers, expanding opportunities, and ensuring that every individual is treated with respect, dignity, and fairness,”stated Hon. Leah Sankaire.

Her leadership was warmly applauded by caregivers, families, and community members who have consistently benefited from her advocacy and hands-on approach.

Community Engagement and Support

The event brought together children, caregivers, families, and residents for a day of interaction, learning, and celebration. Attendees enjoyed shared meals, discussions, and the distribution of  food supplies and essential items to families caring for persons with disabilities.

Caregivers—whose labour of love often goes unrecognised—were specially honoured for their daily sacrifices and tireless dedication.

Commitment from Local Leaders

Addressing the gathering,  noted that Hon. Sankaire’s leadership has significantly advanced the county’s disability agenda.

Hon. Leah Sankaire has been a beacon of hope for families caring for persons with disabilities. Her advocacy, her heart for the community, and her consistent support make a real difference. She is doing an exceptional job, and we are grateful for her leadership,” said one of the beneficiary.

Partnerships That Strengthen Inclusion

The successful commemoration was supported through collaboration with key partners who have remained dedicated to advancing disability inclusion across Kajiado County:

The Rotary (Lottery) Club of Ongata Rongai

The Autism Foundation International (TAFI)*

Their partnership helped deliver a seamless and meaningful event that touched families across the ward.

A Renewed Call for Inclusion

As the world marks IDPWD, Hon. Sankaire called for strengthened policies, increased access to assistive devices, and expanded education opportunities through bursaries and scholarships for children living with disabilities.

The event concluded with renewed commitment from all stakeholders to continue building a county where every child and adult with disabilities is supported, valued, and empowered.
