Dr. Reuben Kigame Marks International Day of Persons with Disabilities with Major Donation of Assistive Devices
Presidential candidate Dr. Reuben Kigame has called for deeper national commitment to disability inclusion, reminding Kenyans that “all of us are potential candidates for disability” and must therefore support robust laws, structures, and services that protect and empower persons with disabilities.
Speaking during the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Dr. Kigame spent much of the day visiting a workshop dedicated to assembling wheelchairs and other assistive devices for individuals living with physical and mobility challenges. The visit highlighted the often-overlooked work of technicians, caregivers, and volunteers who, he noted, “work tirelessly to mitigate limitations and restore dignity to thousands of Kenyans.”
In a significant boost to ongoing efforts, Dr. Kigame also received a donation of wheelchairs and cool boxes from Mobility Worldwide and its partners. The items, which were handed over through the Reuben Kigame Foundation, will be distributed to vulnerable beneficiaries identified across the country.
According to Dr. Kigame, the donation is not just about mobility—it is about economic empowerment. The cool boxes will enable beneficiaries to start small businesses, providing a pathway to sustainable income for individuals who often face barriers in the job market.
“This is how we build an inclusive nation—by ensuring that persons with disabilities not only move with dignity, but also live with hope and opportunity,” he said, expressing gratitude to Mobility Worldwide and reaffirming his commitment to disability rights.
Dr. Kigame concluded by giving thanks to God for the progress made and pledged that, under his leadership, disability inclusion would remain a central pillar of national development.
“To God be the glory,” he said.
