Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary ,  Ministry of Information, Communications & The Digital Economy KE  Hon. William Kabogo Gitau EGH has  called for a renewed commitment to authenticity, integrity and ethical practice in the country’s communication landscape.

He said this in a Speech read by Patricia Terer Ondeng, Secretary for Public Communication, Directorate of Public Communications  during the official opening of the 20th Public Relations Society of Kenya - PRSK Annual Summit in Eldoret. On Tuesday,  2nd December  this year.

In his remarks, the CS reflected on the evolving pressures facing communicators today. " With information moving at unprecedented speed and digital platforms shaping public perception in real time, he noted that audiences are no longer persuaded by polished language alone. Instead, they increasingly demand transparency, accountability and communication that aligns with institutional behaviour" he said.

Guided by the summit’s theme, “Beyond Words: Authentic Communication that Shapes Tomorrow,” the CS emphasized that genuine communication is rooted not merely in what is said, but in the credibility behind it. He underscored that trust once compromised is difficult to rebuild, making integrity indispensable for both individuals and institutions.

Kabogo outlined the government’s ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening coherence and professionalism across public communication. These include the near-complete National Communication Policy, the approved Government Communication Strategy 2024–2027, and the Public Relations and Communications Management Policy. He also highlighted the Public Relations and Communications Management Bill, which will anchor ethical standards and professionalism in law and reinforce the principle of “One Government, One Voice.”

Turning to the impact of emerging technologies, the CS noted that artificial intelligence, deepfakes and algorithm-driven platforms have transformed the information environment. He cautioned that while such tools offer new opportunities for engagement and storytelling, they must not be allowed to distort truth or weaken ethical standards. Communicators, he said, now carry an even greater responsibility to uphold accuracy, fairness and responsibility in their work.

He encouraged professionals to think about how their communication can build unity, strengthen public understanding and inspire collective progress. Effective communication, he noted, should not only capture attention but also contribute to a more informed and cohesive society.

In his closing remarks, Kabogo commended PRSK for its leadership over the past two decades and acknowledged the warm welcome extended by the people of Uasin Gishu. He officially opened the summit with a call for reflection, innovation and a renewed dedication to communication that is both honest and impactful.
