Tensions Rise in Embu as Campaigns Heat Up Ahead of Mbeere By-Election

Political temperatures in Embu County are rising as campaigns intensify ahead of the highly anticipated Mbeere by-election.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has urged leaders and residents to uphold peace and integrity throughout the campaign period. Speaking during a rally in Siakago town, Gachagua emphasized that elections should unite rather than divide the people.

“Let us not be divided by politics. Elections are not enmity; they are an opportunity to choose the right leaders. I urge the people of Mbeere to remain peaceful and resist being influenced by money,” Gachagua said.

His remarks come amid reports of heightened political activity and growing tension among rival camps. Residents say campaigns have reached fever pitch, with candidates from various political parties traversing the region to rally voter support.

However, allegations of vote-buying and the use of inflammatory language at rallies have sparked mixed reactions among locals. Some residents have voiced concerns about potential disruptions, calling on authorities to ensure a peaceful and credible election.

“We are asking the government to guarantee our security and make sure no one interferes with our votes,” one resident told Citizen Radio.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has been urged to uphold transparency and strictly enforce electoral laws to curb malpractice.
