Mwalimu Bomba Ruth Jepchumba Bundotich Named 2025 World Athletics Woman of the Year
Celebrations rang across the athletics community on Monday after Mwalimu Bomba Ruth Jepchumba Bundotich—fondly known simply as Mwalimu—was officially announced as the 2025 World Athletics Woman of the Year Award recipient.
The recognition marks a historic moment for Kenyan sports leadership, honouring a woman whose influence has shaped not only athletes but the very fabric of women’s athletics in the country.
Bundotich, long celebrated in the Rift Valley for her steadfast mentorship and innovative development programs, has been a driving force behind the rise of young female runners across EMC and beyond. Her athletes describe her as a leader of uncommon patience, discipline, and vision—a mentor who sees potential long before it becomes visible to the world.
In announcing the award, World Athletics praised her “unwavering commitment to athlete empowerment, her transformative leadership, and her exceptional impact on the advancement of women in sport.”
Tributes quickly poured in from fellow educators, athletes, and leaders in sports development. Among those who congratulated her was award-winning teacher Shokwei Barsulai, who lauded Bundotich’s milestone as “a triumph for mentorship, resilience, and the power of women who choose to lift others as they rise.”
“This recognition reflects the heart and hard work she has invested in young athletes,” Barsulai said. “Mwalimu Ruth is not just shaping champions on the track—she is shaping character, confidence, and futures.”
Across social platforms and training camps in Iten, Kapsabet, and Eldoret, many hailed the moment as “a win for every girl who ever dreamed of running.”
During a brief address, Bundotich shared her gratitude: “This award isn’t just mine. It belongs to every young woman who laces up her shoes, every coach who believes in a dream before it becomes real, and every community that stands behind its daughters.”
Her journey—from a dedicated grassroots trainer to an international symbol of athletic leadership—continues to inspire generations. And with this global honour now added to her legacy, the path she has forged for women in athletics shines even brighter.
Hongera, Mwalimu. You lift us all.
