Landslides Devastate Elgeyo-Marakwet County, Search and Rescue Operations Underway

 A series of deadly landslides have caused widespread devastation in Endo, Sambirir, and Embobut Wards, in Marakwet East Constituency, leading to the tragic loss of lives and significant damage to property and infrastructure. The disaster has also severely impacted the region’s road network, making it difficult for emergency responders to reach affected areas.

In a statement issued earlier today, the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government, Kipchumba Murkomen, expressed his condolences and pledged support for the affected communities.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Endo, Sambirir, and Embobut following this devastating tragedy," Murkomen said. "The loss of life, destruction of property, and damage to vital infrastructure has left many families in need of urgent assistance."

The landslides were triggered by heavy rainfall that has been affecting parts of the country over the past several days. The affected communities have been left without access to vital services, and many homes have been completely destroyed by the cascading mud and debris.

In response to the crisis, the Government has deployed police and military helicopters carrying medical personnel, Red Cross teams, and essential supplies to assist in the ongoing search and rescue operations. Teams are working around the clock to locate survivors and recover bodies from the wreckage.

The Red Cross has been actively involved in providing emergency medical care and first aid to the injured, while local authorities, together with non-governmental organizations, are assisting with the distribution of relief items such as food, water, and shelter.

Efforts are also underway to restore the damaged road network, which is essential for ensuring that emergency services can reach those in need. Restoration work is being carried out in collaboration with the County Government of Elgeyo-Marakwet, with machinery being deployed to clear debris and open up vital routes.

While the search and rescue operation continues, the Government has committed to providing further assistance to the affected families, including the restoration of critical infrastructure and support for long-term recovery efforts.

"This is a time of great tragedy for the people of Elgeyo-Marakwet, but we want them to know that we are with them in their hour of need," Murkomen said. "We will continue to work alongside the County Government and all our partners to ensure that relief reaches those who need it most."

The Cabinet Secretary also urged the public to remain vigilant, as ongoing rainfall continues to pose a risk of further landslides in the area.
