KURA Leads Tree Planting Exercise to Promote Environmental Sustainability

By John Kariuki

The Director Corporate Services, Mr Reuben Mayienda, led staff and key stakeholders in a tree planting exercise along the Nairobi Eastern Bypass. The initiative underscored the Kenya Urban Roads Authority’s commitment to environmental sustainability, the expansion of urban green spaces, and support for the government’s climate action agenda.

The exercise involved the planting of hundreds of seedlings along a busy corridor that has experienced rapid urban development and increased vehicular activity in recent years. Beyond beautifying the area, the effort aimed to mitigate environmental degradation, reduce carbon emissions, and contribute to long-term ecological restoration. By integrating such initiatives into its operations, KURA is demonstrating how infrastructure development and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand.

Participants in the exercise included KURA staff, community representatives, and other stakeholders who shared insights on the importance of preserving urban ecosystems. Mr Mayienda highlighted the role of collective action in addressing climate change, emphasising that initiatives like tree planting are a tangible way for institutions and communities to make a difference. He also encouraged continuous engagement from employees and partners, noting that sustained efforts are key to achieving meaningful environmental impact.

Under the leadership of Director General Eng Silas Kinoti, KURA has undergone transformative growth. His guidance has seen the Authority adopt modern infrastructure development practices while remaining aligned with national sustainability objectives. Eng Kinoti’s administration has consistently promoted projects that balance urban growth with environmental responsibility, positioning KURA as a model for sustainable infrastructure management in Kenya.

This tree planting exercise is part of a broader strategy by KURA to enhance urban greenery, promote climate resilience, and engage communities in sustainable development initiatives. It highlights the growing recognition that roads and transport infrastructure can contribute to environmental health when approached thoughtfully.

By undertaking activities such as this, KURA continues to demonstrate its dedication not only to building and maintaining urban roads but also to fostering a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable urban environment for current and future generations.
