NOREB Signs Landmark MoU to Spur Development and Peace in Kerio Valley
In a major step toward promoting regional stability and boosting food security, governors from the North Rift Economic Bloc (NOREB) on Wednesday signed key Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Kerio Valley Development Authority (KVDA) and the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK).
The MoUs aim to unlock the vast agricultural potential of the Kerio Valley and implement joint initiatives that promote peace, social cohesion, and economic empowerment across the North Rift region.
The signing ceremony, hosted in Uasin Gishu County, brought together top county leaders, including host Governor Jonathan Bii and fellow NOREB Governors Hon. Stephen Sang (Nandi), Hon. Simon Kachapin (West Pokot), and Hon. Wisley Rotich (Elgeyo Marakwet). Deputy Governors Dr. Yulita Mitei (Uasin Gishu) and Hon. Felix Kipng’ok (Baringo) were also present, alongside senior representatives from KVDA and NCCK.
Speaking at the event, Governor Bii described the partnership as a strategic move to address long-standing challenges in the region, particularly in the Kerio Valley, an area that has faced frequent inter-community conflict and underdevelopment.
“This partnership is about building lasting peace and unlocking our shared potential,” said Bii. “The North Rift is a cornerstone of Kenya’s food security, and with the right investments in agriculture, infrastructure, and social programs, we can transform the livelihoods of our people.”
The agreement outlines plans for collaborative peacebuilding efforts, youth and women empowerment programs, and agricultural development projects aimed at enhancing food production and reducing poverty.
KVDA Managing Director Sammy Naporos welcomed the partnership, saying it would accelerate ongoing development efforts in the region.
NCCK leadership also pledged their support, emphasizing the need for continued dialogue, community involvement, and inclusive development to ensure lasting peace.
The initiative is expected to roll out in phases, with immediate focus on high-impact areas within the Kerio Valley belt.
Governors from the NOREB bloc reaffirmed their commitment to working together to foster unity and progress in the North Rift, signaling a renewed sense of regional solidarity.
