More Suspects Arraigned as Probe into June 25 Unrest Intensifies

Authorities have intensified legal action following the violent protests that swept parts of the country on June 25, 2025, with dozens of suspects now arraigned in various courts across Kenya.

In Thika, Kiambu County, a total of 85 suspects were brought before the Thika Law Courts. The group includes 56 individuals arrested in Juja and 29 from Thika, all facing charges related to the unrest that rocked the region.

In a separate court session, another suspect from Ruiru appeared virtually before the Ruiru Law Courts, underscoring the judiciary’s commitment to expedite the processing of protest-related cases amid increased caseloads.

Beyond Kiambu, arraignments were also recorded in several other counties. In Murang’a, 32 suspects appeared before the courts, while 15 were arraigned in Ol Kalou, 10 in Kisii, and 9 in Bungoma.

The arrests and court proceedings are part of ongoing investigations into the nationwide demonstrations that turned violent in several towns, leading to incidents of looting, destruction of property, and disruption of public order.

Security agencies have maintained that those found culpable will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

The National Police Service and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) have reiterated their commitment to ensuring accountability, even as human rights groups call for transparency and fairness in handling the cases.

Investigations into the planning, financing, and execution of the June 25 protests are still underway, with more arrests expected in the coming days.
