Matiang’i to Resign from World Bank, Eyes 2027 Presidential Bid
By Maxwell Maungu
Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has confirmed that he will be stepping down from his role at the World Bank, signaling a major political comeback ahead of Kenya’s 2027 general elections.
Speaking in an exclusive interview aired on Citizen TV on Monday night, Dr. Matiang’i revealed that he has officially notified the World Bank of his decision not to renew his contract when it comes up for review.
“I have indicated to the World Bank that I’m leaving,” he said. “When my contract comes up for review, I will not renew it.”
While he did not specify the exact date of his exit, Matiang’i noted that the move is strategic, allowing him the space and flexibility to re-engage with the local political landscape in preparation for the upcoming elections.
Since exiting government following the 2022 polls, Matiang’i has kept a relatively low profile. However, recent sightings of him meeting with key opposition figures have ignited speculation of a potential presidential bid.
Several political parties, including Jubilee and the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), have already expressed interest in backing him. Still, Matiang’i has maintained that he is in the early stages of consultation and is not ready to commit to any one party.
“If I commit to one political party now, I risk locking out others I’m still engaging with,” he said, hinting at the possibility of forming or joining a broader coalition.
He emphasized the importance of unity and strategic compromise in Kenya’s fractured political landscape.
“Kenya has over 89 political parties, and that’s how our democracy is structured for now,” Matiang’i observed.
