Harambee Stars Veteran Brian Onyango Departs Stellenbosch After Brief Stint

South Africa – Kenyan international defender Brian Onyango has officially left South African Premier Division side Stellenbosch FC following the expiration of his short-term contract with the club.

Onyango, who joined the Cape Winelands-based outfit at the beginning of the 2024/25 season, made just eight appearances across all competitions. Despite limited game time, he played a crucial role in helping the club reach the MTN8 Cup final and secure qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup.

During his tenure at Stellenbosch, the veteran centre-back also earned a long-awaited recall to the Kenyan national team, Harambee Stars, marking his return to international duty after nearly two years on the sidelines. In doing so, he became only the third non-South African player to receive a national team call-up while playing for Stellenbosch.

“Everyone at Stellenbosch would like to thank Brian for his service to the club and wish him well as he embarks on the next chapter of his career,” the club said in an official statement released on Monday.

Although his stay at the club was brief, Onyango’s leadership and experience left a lasting impression. His contributions were recognized with a nomination for the club’s 2024/25 Sportsman of the Season Award—a nod to his professionalism both on and off the pitch.

The former Posta Rangers and Tusker FC defender is now in search of a new club as he aims to maintain his place in the national team setup. With his wealth of experience and a renewed hunger for consistent playing time, Onyango is expected to attract interest from clubs both within Africa and beyond.

As he departs the South African top flight, all eyes will be on where the towering defender lands next—and whether his next move will provide the platform he needs to extend his international career.
