Governor Wisly Rotich Flags Off Kaptagat Forest Half Marathon Ahead of Conservation Event Graced by President Ruto

Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisly Rotich on Saturday morning flagged off the Kaptagat Forest Half Marathon, marking the start of activities leading to the 9th edition of the Kaptagat Integrated Conservation Programme — a major national event that promotes forest conservation and sustainable livelihoods.

The event was held in collaboration with the Principal Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, Eng. Festus Ng’eno, and drew hundreds of participants from across the county and beyond.

“This morning, together with PS Eng. Festus Ng’eno, we flagged off the Kaptagat Forest Half Marathon — a race that not only tests endurance but also symbolizes our collective commitment to environmental conservation,” said Governor Rotich.

The marathon is part of a series of pre-events leading up to a high-profile gathering at Simotwo Boys High School, where His Excellency President William Samoei Ruto is expected to officiate the main conservation ceremony later in the day.

Governor Rotich emphasized the importance of community engagement in environmental stewardship, noting that conservation efforts are deeply tied to the well-being and economic resilience of the local population.

“The Kaptagat Integrated Conservation Programme is more than just planting trees. It’s about restoring ecosystems, securing water sources, and improving livelihoods for the people of Elgeyo Marakwet and beyond,” he added.

Now in its ninth edition, the Kaptagat initiative aligns with the national government’s 15 Billion Tree Agenda, and is a model of collaborative conservation involving local leaders, national government agencies, and civil society.

Governor Rotich also praised the athletes and community members who took part in the marathon, urging them to continue being ambassadors for environmental protection.“Our athletes and youth are not just running today — they are running toward a greener and more sustainable future,” he said.
